1) Alternative methods to preventive care or complementary and alternative methods (CAM) are methods that utilize a holistic approach and/or lifestyle-based methods to prevent diseases, and to maintain mental and physical wellness. Methods such as taking herbal supplements, dietary changes, and yoga have proven to have a significant impact on the overall health of patients. Herbal supplements such as ashwagandha have been used to manage stress, anxiety and fatigue (Hassen et al., 2022). The use of herbal supplements has been on the rise because they are do not require a prescription from a physician or advance practice nurse and generally safe when taken in moderation. It is important to note that herbal supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and patients should consult their primary care provider before taking. Dietary changes have also shown to be beneficial to preventing or slowing the progression of diseases.
2) Recent systematic reviews have found that pet therapy, which is a structured patient-animal interaction between patients and specially trained animals, can help alleviate psychological stress, anxiety, and depression in a number of patient groups, including those who are hospitalized and have chronic illnesses. However, the effectiveness of pet therapy depends on the parameters of the therapy and the population of interest (Sim et al., 2025; Chang et al., 2024). I am excited to discuss my personal experience with you. I had a homeless patient who was dependent on his dog for emotional support. He became increasingly agitated during his hospital stay and asked to leave the hospital against medical advice (AMA) because he missed his dog at the shelter. I realized that the emotional bond and its significance to his care were important, so I offered him pet therapy services that were available at our hospital. He agreed. After the interaction with the therapy dog, he seemed happier, more relaxed, and more willing to participate in his treatment plan.
