Jordan Mitchell, a newly certified project manager at a growing logistics tech company, has been assigned to lead a high-visibility supply chain optimization project with a tight timeline and cross-departmental collaboration. Known for their organization and attention to detail, Jordan excels in managing schedules, documenting processes, and ensuring tasks are completed on time. However, the role now demands greater stakeholder engagement, team motivation, and adaptive problem-solving in uncertain environmentsareas where Jordan feels less confident. Midway through the project, tensions rise among team members, some stakeholders are unresponsive, and project scope shifts are becoming frequent. Jordan realizes that relying solely on technical skills may no longer be enough and begins to reflect on personal strengths and areas for growth in leadership, communication, and strategic thinking.

Discussion Prompt: As a project manager in Jordans position, what do you identify as your top three strengths and your top three areas for improvement? How do these impact your ability to lead a project team through challenges like scope change, stakeholder resistance, or cross-functional tension?

Chapter 4 Project Team Members

Overview:

The focus of this chapter is on project team stakeholders because project managers are likely to spend most of their time with this group. Also, the project team conducts most of the project work. Therefore, it is critical to keep project team members motivated, informed, and actively engaged with the project. Effective management of a project team begins with a proper kickoff. Project kickoff meetings must inform team members about the mission before the team. Team members are more effective if they understand higher-level project goals and deliverables and why they are important to the organization. Also, kickoff meetings should begin to build team relationships and commitment. Effective project managers are confident without being overconfident. Also, successful project managers use their awareness to determine when project team members are not achieving their full potential due to obstacles such as poor motivation, lack of proper direction, or being overburdened with too much work. In many cases, a personal conversation with the impacted project team members will uncover the path to resolution.
