The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a, psychological framework developed in the 1950s to explain and predict health-related behaviors by focusing on individual attitudes and beliefs. It posits that individuals will take action to prevent or manage illness if they feel susceptible to a condition, believe it is serious, see benefits in taking action, and have the confidence to overcome barriers.

Key Concepts of the Health Belief Model

The HBM consists of six main constructs that determine an individual’s readiness to change:

  • Perceived Susceptibility: An individual’s assessment of their risk of contracting a disease.
  • Perceived Severity: An individual’s assessment of the seriousness of a condition and its potential consequences (e.g., medical or social consequences)

.

  • Perceived Benefits: An individual’s belief in the efficacy of the advised action to reduce the risk or seriousness of the impact.
  • Perceived Barriers: An individual’s assessment of the tangible and psychological costs of the advised action.
  • Cues to Action: Strategies or events that activate readiness, such as a doctor’s recommendation, a public service announcement, or experiencing symptoms.
  • Self-Efficacy: The confidence in one’s ability to successfully take action.
