And now, for those of you who didn’t know, the person in the picture is Davey Havok of the band ‘A Fire Inside’ also known as AFI.

Over his long career, Davey Havok has continued to advocate strongly for a lifestyle free of drugs and casual sex which are two sides of the infamous triangle of sex, drugs, and Rock n Roll.

  • Despite his Straightedge lifestyle, Davey Havok has continued to remain a prominent and relevant artist in the very competitive music industry.
  • He has remained a Vegan and is a strong champion for animal rights.

AFI has been playing for more than 30 years.

  • A famous band in their own right, AFI has additionally opened for Green Day. Green Day needs no introduction as most are familiar with “American Idiot”, “21 guns” etc. Davey Havok was also the lead in the Broadway production of Green Days American Idiot.
  • AFI has also opened for The Cure (Friday I’m in Love’)
  • AFI has also opened for Linkin Park (Numb).
  • As an aside, Charles Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park struggled with depression and substance abuse for most of his life and sadly ended his life by suicide. Bennington was listed as number 46 on their list of the “Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time”.
  • We will cover depression and mental health from a cultural perspective later in this course.

In 2006, competing against many already famous bands, the new kids on the block, AFI, was the winner of MTV VMA’s Best Rock Video for their song Miss Murder.
