A. Complete the Week 1 Module: Read Chapters 1 and 2 in the text; and Read Chapter 1: Guide to Nursing’s Policy Statement before responding to the questions:
The following is just part of what you are to read in Chapter 1:
Nursings Social Policy Statement states: “It is expected that nurses will address the problems faced by individual patients including issues of health disparities and that nursing will be involved with and lead in health-related issues important to society. In some instances, nursing will be at the vanguard of emerging health-related issues. Nursing will participate in the promulgation of healthcare policy at regional, state, national, and global levels” (2015, p. 21).
Initial post: The initial post is Due Thursday by 11:59 pm ET. Include answers only to the questions below:
A. Write at least 1 paragraph in response to the following questions: What stands out to you about ANA’s policy statement? Do you agree with ANAs role as an organization, and their view that nurses have a duty or responsibility to be involved in advocacy? Be specific about how, and or why you agree. If you do not agree, do you believe nurses have a role in influencing health care policy, and how does your view differ from ANAs?
Write at least 1 paragraph in response to: Who is your State Representative and State Senator (not federal representatives)? Are either of these legislators a member of the Health or Health Policy Committee in their respective house? If you live in Michigan, use the links below to identify your state legislators.
B. Identify (1) One Bill that is currently pending in the Michigan State Senate or House, or a federal level Bill currently pending before the US Senate or US House. Either bill should be intended to address a health issue OR a professional nursing issue. Focus on Registered Nurses when looking up professional issues. DO NOT USE the following topics: nurse burnout, expanding scope of advanced practice nursing, or eliminating mandatory overtime.
Write at least 1 paragraph in response to the following about your Bill: What is the Bill number and name, and who sponsored it? Explain the bill’s purpose or intent (what is it supposed to do?) Who will the bill impact, and how? Based on this information, and your consideration of it, what is your view of the pending legislation, as it currently reads?
NOTE: Do not include the instructions or questions in your posts. Posts should contain complete sentences, and full paragraphs. Each paragraph should have at least 3-4 sentences. Include full citations in each post, and a reference list after each post in APA Format.

C. Students are expected to respond to at least 2 peers during the discussion board. Compare and contrast your bill and view about the bill’s intent with the bills and views of others. Please address each other by name. Include full citations within the text, as required by APA Format. Follow each post with a reference list in APA Format.

How to identify State Legislators:
1. Go to “locate your senator” by address (must enter your home address)
2. Check out the link to “Committees” at top of page, and find out if your senator serves on
the Health Policy Committee

2. Click on “Committees”, and “Standing Committees”, to find out if your representative serves
on the Health Committee
If you live in another state, please go to your state legislature website to identify your state level senator, and house representative, and to determine if either serves on the Health or Health Policy Committee in their respective house.

If you are not in Michigan, please look up your state’s legislative site to access current Bills for either the state Senate or House. You are welcome to use a bill from your home state.
