The purpose of this discussion is to build community in the classroom and to discuss the effect of stress on certain materials. During this week we learned how to calculate the amount of stress and analyze the amount of strain. Recall situations where you may have stressed certain materials in everyday life such as an electrical wire within a circuit, a zipper on a coat, or even the leg on a chair. Discuss how certain stressful situations can occur and the potential impact caused by the stress. How do you think these simple stressful events can relate to engineering design challenges. Review examples presented in Chapter 5 of your textbook and videos viewed from Reading and Resources. This will support Course Objective 7: Evaluate the integration of safety into the design of mechanical components subjected to tension or shear stress.
