Utilizing the chapter you have chosen during week one, create a patient from this subpopulation to teach. You will need to. Book -Mary A. Nies; Melanie McEwen 8th Edition Chapter 3: Thinking Up stream

1- Introduce the person to the class. This will mean describing the patient to the class. The patient should be a common example of the populations you have read about. For example, if you are reading a chapter over senior health you could say My patient is Rupert, a 78 year old male. If you are reading a chapter about home health you could say, My patient is a 40 year old female receiving IV antibiotics at home through a PICC line. It can be as brief as the examples above or if can contain more substance if it is pertinent to what you will be teaching.

2-Identify 3 common health risks specific to the population(s) in your chapter. Provide some background information to the class such as statistics (how common is this issue compared to the general population? What information would a nurse need to know about this population) and/or the causes for this increased risk (Polypharmacy plus changes in metabolism of medication in the elderly puts them at a higher risk for falls, for example). Include this background information for all there risks you identified. Cite your sources within your paragraph in APA. Be sure to include your references at the bottom of your post (also in APA).

Demonstrate the health promotion methods you would use to educate your patient using ONE of the three risks you have mentioned in number 2. This will look similar to the script of a play.

Use the following format to organize your ideas:

  • Assess teaching need: All patients need teaching, even if it is reinforcement. Your goal will be for your “patient” to understand this specific topic by the end of the A goal!
  • Plan: What are the most important points to discuss about this topic? What do you want to bring with you to ensure learning has occurred? Handouts, verbal, demonstrations, etc. You have an endless budget in this world.
  • Implement: How are you actually doing your teaching? This will be demonstrated in your script.
  • Evaluation: This is the most important step! How did you evaluate the effectiveness of your patients learning?
