Discussion Week 1
Discussion Forum: Historical Foundations and Philosophical Perspectives in Nursing
Professional nursing did not emerge in isolation; rather, it evolved through centuries of social change, scientific advancement, political reform, and global collaboration. From caregiving practices in the Classical Era and the religious influences of the Middle Ages to the transformative reforms initiated during the Industrial Revolution, nursing has continuously adapted to meet the needs of society. The contributions of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War established the foundation for modern nursing practice, sanitation reform, epidemiology, and formal nursing education. Additionally, the global development of nursing in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United Statesalong with the formation of the International Council of Nursesillustrates the professions expanding scope, standardization, and international collaboration.
As baccalaureate-prepared nurses, understanding the historical and philosophical foundations of nursing strengthens professional identity, supports evidence-based practice, and enhances leadership capacity within complex healthcare systems.
Based on this weeks readings and learning materials, thoughtfully address the following:
- How did historical, political, and social forces during the Classical Era, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Dark Period of Nursing, and Industrial Revolution shape the development of professional nursing?
- In what specific ways did Florence Nightingale influence modern nursing practice, public health reform, and healthcare systems?
- Compare the development of professional nursing in at least two countries (UK, Canada, Australia, or the United States). What similarities and differences do you observe?
- Differentiate between beliefs, values, and paradigms in nursing. Why is understanding these distinctions important for baccalaureate-level practice?
- Draft a brief initial personal philosophy of nursing (12 paragraphs) that reflects professional accountability, evidence-based practice, leadership, and commitment to patient-centered care.
Support your discussion with scholarly references where appropriate and connect historical foundations to contemporary nursing practice. Engage respectfully with your peers by expanding on their ideas, asking clarifying questions, and integrating evidence to enrich the dialogue.
