Disc. #2

Greetings Class,

For this discussion post, you will need to have read and reviewed chapter 4 of the textbook and then respond to the prompt. Remember, the learning objectives for the current chapter are as follows:

Learning Objectives

  1. Define and distinguish conceptualization, operationalization, and an indicator.
  2. Identify the different forms of single questions and response choices.
  3. Explain the rationale for creating multi-item indexes, and discuss the issues that should always be explored about indexes.
  4. Give examples of the four levels of measurement.
  5. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the four approaches to testing the validity of measures.
  6. Define four basic methods of evaluating reliability.
  7. Understand the difference between measurement validity and reliability.

The current discussion will help to work on objectives 1-4.

PROMPT:

I want you to think about how would you define “alcoholism?” First, write a brief definition based on your own beliefs. Second, based on this conceptualization, describe a method of measurement that would be valid for a study of alcoholism (as you define it). If you are not certain about how you would measure it or what the term conceptualization means, revisit the chapter and lecture. Now go to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism website at and read its description of alcohol use disorder. What is the definition used? Write that definition in your response and then describe how alcohol use disorder is actually conceptualized? Describe How this compares to your definition?

For the response to another student, compare your definitions to those of another student. Be specific and provide details and examples of what is similar and what is not. Discuss what you learned from this effort.
