Purpose:

This assignment asks you to engage directly with detention and bail data provided by the Vera Institute of Justice. You will use Veras publicly available datasets to analyze pretrial detention trends and reflect on what the numbers reveal about equity, public safety, and justice reform.

Instructions:

1. Access one of the linked publications

5. Select one publication that highlights detention or bail practices (e.g., jail population trends, pretrial detention rates, demographic disparities).
6. Create one original chart or graph (line, bar, or pie) that illustrates a key trend or comparison (e.g., by year, race/ethnicity, gender, or jurisdiction).
7. Write a 23 page analysis (double-spaced, APA 7th edition) that includes:

• Introduction: Identify the dataset you selected (title, variables, years, jurisdiction).
• Findings: Explain what your graph shows (e.g., increases/decreases, disparities, noteworthy shifts).
• Interpretation: Discuss the implications of this data for understanding detention practices and bail reform debates.
• Connection to Readings: Link your findings to at least one of the assigned readings (Lowenkamp et al., Stevenson, or Vera Guide) or The Bail Trap film.
• References: Provide APA citations for the dataset and any readings you reference.
