Design a developmentally appropriate toy

After reading Modules 5 & 6, and studying lifespan theory and stages of development, you know that developmental psychologists view play as the major means through which physical, cognitive, and social skills are mastered.

Let’s take this process a step further and apply your learning! Your task is to design a toy suitable for a 2-6 year old child, or a 7-11 year old child, keeping in mind the physical, cognitive, and social needs of children in that age group.

Then answer the following questions (in order): be sure to include the question number and a separate paragraph for each number for organization. Do not use a list format. Write essay style when answering all questions. Do not simply copy and paste instructions from a toy you found on the internet. Even if you found a toy on the internet and are reusing for this assignment, your writing about it must be original and you must connect to course concepts as needed.

  1. What is the name of your toy? How does the child play with it or use it?
  2. How old is the child for whom the toy is intended? What features of the toy make it developmentally appropriate? Be sure to mention at least one theorist regarding stages of development (cite our textbook).
  3. What domain or domains of development is your toy designed to stimulate? How are they stimulated? Be sure to mention relevant associated milestones that relate to development (cite our textbook).
  4. What are some of the specific features of the toy (e.g., size, shape, color, noise- making properties, etc.) that enhance its attractiveness and play value? (cite our textbook)
  5. What considerations should be given to injury control when the toy is used?
  6. What was the most significant thing you learned in doing this work?
