Answer the following questions completely with detailed support and explanations of your responses:
- States have a long-established practice of selling drivers motor vehicle information to auto insurance companies. How do you feel about car companies collecting and selling information about your driving habits to determine your driving risk?
- Do you consider this data collection an invasion of privacy?
- Do you trust that the data is being used to help people develop safer driving habits?
- Do you believe that people who are knowingly monitored are better drivers?
- Do you trust that the data being shared is accurate?
- Do you think sharing this information could result in lower insurance rates? What about higher rates?
- Will you possibly change the way you drive because of what you have learned in this assignment?
- Will the information in this article influence your future vehicle purchases and/or the purchase of services?
OPTIONAL: Event data recorders (EDR) are similar to black boxes and are designed to collect telemetry leading up to and during a car crash. Should EDRs be admissible as courtroom evidence (e.g., for civil lawsuits or criminal convictions)? What if the data could exonerate a driver?
To ensure full credit:
- Include specific examples or data (e.g., privacy laws, telematics stats, insurance models).
- Compare perspectives (consumer privacy vs. insurer benefits)
- Tie personal reflections to actionable changes (e.g., opting into usage-based insurance, choosing privacy-focused features).
