PART 1-

PaintingValue in Painting

Analyze how an artist organizes a painting through value.

Value Pattern is a way to organize a painting or art work. It is the organization of lights and darks to lead the viewer through the work. A high contrast area (black to white values) of the image will attract the eye first. Then you can follow values through the rest of the work to see the rest of the information. An Artist is the director of the work.

Please pick a favorite REPRESENTATIONAL painting (it shows realism, what things actually look like as opposed to non objective abstraction- not based on real objects) and either

1. Print out a black and white copy of it OR convert online to black and white and save a jpg of it online in a program where you can mark it up.
2. Then look at the painting by squinting your eyes at it. (This reduces it to basic shapes of value).
3. Reduce the painting to basic shapes of value in black, gray and white by recreating the work in basic shapes of value.
4. See how the painting is balanced, what is the area you notice first, how do you move through the work following value. Write these notes in the discussion, posted with the original, and the simple shape value analysis and respond to at least 2 others in the class.

PART 2-

For this week’s assignment, we are going to create a class Padlet Gallery wall. Thinking of the artworks we saw last week and Chicanx art that you have seen, we will analyze the artworks through the lens of Ethnic Studies concepts and terms. See Padlet below.

1. Click the “+” on the bottom right of Padlet below to post an image- and if your name shows as “anonymous” please change it or put comment in the assignment so I know it is you for points.
2. For the “subject” line- provide the artist’s name, title of the work, year made and medium (artworks titles should be in quotes)
3. Write a caption under the photo that relates the artwork to Ethnic Studies- write at least 50 words for full credit (please type your name here if it is not showing anywhere else).

After you post submit the assignment then I will go in and check the Padlet and post your points and will leave feedback in the gradebook comment box.

Please don’t post the same image that someone else has already posted. You can search the internet or use an image from our slides (Remember Week 1 had several images) or it could be images of murals. The artist doesn’t have to be famous, here is a list of artists from the “Chicano Collection” to give you some ideas but it doesn’t have to be one of these.
