Brief:

During this semester you will undertake a number of in-class activities and exercises, aimed at improving your overall writing skills, and your understanding of how to write for different media platforms and/ or media categories.

This portfolio requires you to apply what you have learned with a focus on news writing.

There are three mandatory CHECKPOINTs to complete.

Work through each of the steps on this brief. Doing everything in each step, means youve met the brief (C grade). So, think of ways you can supplement your work by going over and above the brief.

Steps:

Your portfolio must include the following pieces of writing and its associated elements/ styles (EX: Inverted Pyramid; Champagne Glass), as outlined:

1. News Article (CHECKPOINT 1 Topic 4)

  • Task: Write a hard news story reporting on a current or recent news event. The focus must be on what happened, who was involved, when, where, and why it matters. The writing must be factual, neutral, and structured using the inverted pyramid style.
  • Word Count: 300 350 words
  • Tone: Neutral and objective
  • Include: Headline, lead/hook, body

2. News Feed Posts (CHECKPOINT 2 Topic 6)

  • Part 1: X (Twitter)
  • Task: Rewrite the hard news article for X (Twitter)
  • Character Count: exactly 280 characters
  • Include: Lead (condensed) and key detail (written like a micro-headline and lead combined)
  • Not included: hooks designed to provoke emotion; questions; hashtags; emojis; opinions
  • Part 2: Facebook
  • Task: Rewrite the hard news article for Facebook
  • Word Count: 100-150 words
  • Include: Headline, expanded body, attribution
  • Not included: opinion or commentary, questions or engagement prompts, speculation or emotive framing.

3. News Update (CHECKPOINT 3 Topic 12)

  • Task: Write a follow-up news update to the hard news story used in your portfolio. This task assesses your ability to report new developments clearly and ethically while maintaining continuity with earlier coverage. This is NOT the same article as you wrote for CHECKPOINT 1 – it needs to contain new information.
  • Word Count: 300 350 words
  • Tone: Neutral and objective
  • Include: Headline, lead/hook, body and new information.

Present your portfolio as professionally as you can, so think of how youre displaying your work. All images should be original (identify yours). Any sourced images must be royalty-free (provide the URL).

Formatting:

  • 12 pt Times New Roman (Titles can be a different font.)
