Covey Journal Reflection #4

Personal Mission Statement (15 points)

Your journal reflection should be at least 1 page in length (12-point Arial font, double-spaced) & no more than 2 pages (see Journal Reflection Rubric go to Content> Rubric)

Overview

This journal assignment focuses on Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. As Covey notes, all things are created twice. Habit 2 focuses on the First Creation or the mental pictureof what you want to create (e.g., blueprint of the house you want to build). The Second Creation is the physical creation (the actual house you create) and is part of Habit 3, which we will discuss in an upcoming week.

To Begin with the End in Mind, you need to create your personal mission statement (philosophy or creed). Focus on what you want to be (character) and to do (contributions and achievements) and on the values or principles in which these are based. To help you understand the concept of a personal mission statement:

Review the brief Covey video: How to Develop Your Personal Mission Statement

For this journal reflection, include the following:

1. Write your personal mission statement (see example below).

2. Below your mission statement, include a reflection on your experience writing this personal mission statement. For example:

3. How did you feel writing your mission statement?

4. Was writing the statement easy or difficult for you? Explain

5. What did you learn about yourself in this process? What did you learn about your values/guiding principles or Character Ethic?

Example of a mission statement below:

My personal mission is to make a difference in the lives of others by demonstrating care and compassion through teaching and mentoring. I value being a committed, reliable, team player across all sectors of my life including family, work, and community. I want to focus on my personal wellness in order to help me achieve these values and be the best team player. I want to guide, teach, and mentor others in achieving wellness and improving their quality of life. I want to dedicate time and contribute to meaningful research that improves our understanding of wellness including health-risk behaviors.
