Worth: 25% of your final grade for the course Due: Upon completion of Section 3 (Units 810) Length: 2,5003,000 words This assignment provides the opportunity for an in-depth exploration of a contemporary political economic issue through independent research. Identify one important area or issue in the study of Canada and the global political economy that has recently gained public attention or that public policy might seek to remedy. Topics may include, for example, a recent labour-management dispute, migrant labour, low-waged work, union renewal, youth unemployment, the gender/racial/class wage gap, trends in household/caring work, dis/ability, automation, labour market polarization, Indigenous rights, limits imposed by the climate crisis, and others. This is an opportunity to let your interest in Canadian and global political economy run wild. Your essay must draw on a combination of scholarly articles and other sources from the course, and it should make reference to at least five academic sources that are not part of the required reading list for the course. Include in-text citations and bibliographic references for all sources that you quote, summarize, or paraphrase in your essay. Use a standard citation style (Chicago, MLA, APA, etc.) consistently and correctly. For this essay, you must also do the following: Clearly demonstrate your main proposition in the form of a thesis statement/argument (not just a topic sentence). Explain what the problem or challenge is and why it is important. Provide evidence that might persuade the reader that your approach is an improvement over existing policies and/or practices. Demonstrate how the evidence supports, develops, and/or extends your essays thesis. Organize the flow of your ideas and evidence effectively. Sections of a good argument proceed in a logical way, but also develop the implications of a thesis more deeply as the essay progresses. The reader should understand how each new section extends the argument that has come before it and prepares for the argument that is still to come. Answer all parts of the assignment. Provide definitions of the key concepts and theories relevant for your analysis from the readings for these units. Support your arguments with empirical and theoretical evidence. Illustrate major points with specific examples and/or figures obtained from scholarly sources with complete citations. If you want to use additional resources that are not in the reading list for the course, confine your research to academic sources and reputable popular publications (of the sort included in the readings for this course) and provide complete references. Note that Wikipedia will not be accepted as an academic source. Consult the AU Librarys Internet Searching guide to understand what to watch for when using online resources. Your assignment must be typed, double-spaced, 2,5003,000 words in length, and carefully proof-read.
