COMMUNICATION MODEL

The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand and apply the key elements of the Transactional Model of Communication by creating a detailed, personalized visual representation.

Background:

Chapter One focuses on various models of communication. While the mechanics of these models are essential, the true power lies in understanding the nuances that bring communication to life: context, influences, and relationships.

One key element often overlooked is contextthe entirety of the situation. Context includes where you are, who youre with, and the nature of your relationships. For example, you likely speak differently to your best friend than to your supervisor or in a formal setting like church.

Another important element is noise, which refers to anything that interferes with your message.

Noise can take many forms:

  • Psychological: “What did he mean by ‘just friends’?”
  • Physiological: A headache or hunger distracting you.
  • Cultural: Feeling out of place as the only person of your race or background in a group.
  • Physical: Jackhammers outside your classroom during a lecture.

The channel is the method by which the message is delivered. For example:

  • Face-to-face communication is “channel-rich,” with many cues such as facial expressions, tone, posture, and eye contact.
  • Email or text is “channel-lean,” with fewer cues available.

Consider this: Would it matter if your boss fired you in person versus via a tweet? Of course, it would!

The channel shapes how messages are received and interpreted.

Instructions:

  • Create Your Communication Event
  • First, create a realistic scenario to serve as your context.
  • Clearly describe the situation, including:
  • Where the communication is taking place.
  • Who is involved.
  • What the relationship is between the participants.
  • Example: Imagine a team meeting at work where a project deadline is being discussed. Your boss (sender) communicates updates to you (receiver) via a Zoom call (channel), but theres construction noise in the background (physical noise), and youre worried about how the changes affect your personal timeline (psychological noise).
  • Design Your Transactional Model
  • Use a design program of your choicePowerPoint, Canva, or another toolto create a visual depiction of the Transactional Model of Communication based on your scenario.
  • Your visual must include and clearly label all the elements of the model:
  • Sender
  • Receiver
  • Message
  • Channel
  • Context
  • Noise (include at least two types of noise)
  • Feedback
  • Save and Submit Your Visual
  • Save your design as a JPG or PDF file.
  • Attach the file to your assignment submission.

Tips for Creating Your Visual:

  • Design Tools:
  • In PowerPoint, you can group all the elements into one image by selecting everything, right-clicking, and choosing “Group.” Save the file as a JPG under “Save As.”
  • In Canva, design your image and download it as a JPG or PDF.
  • Visual Appeal:
  • Use images, symbols, or drawings to represent each element of the model.
  • Be creative but ensure the design is clear and easy to understand.
  • Label Everything:
  • Ensure all components of the model are labeled and their connections are clear.
  • Use arrows to indicate the flow and direction of communication.

  • YouTube tutorials for PowerPoint or Canva can assist if you’re unfamiliar with these tools.
  • Use free resources like Google Images, personal photos, or clip art to enhance your design.

Reminder:

Your submission must be an original creation. Plagiarism will result in a zero for this assignment.
