Choose one of the two cases and discuss it according to the guidelines below. In your discussion, you must rely on the course materials and readings and specifically refer to at least one thinker studied in the course and one central idea, claim, or concept from their work. Case 1: See the advertisement poster for the Edison phonograph from November 1905 (attached in the appendix of the assignment) OR Case 2: See the advertisement for a television device in the video available on the course Moodle. Assignment Instructions Discuss the selected case study through the lens of one of the themes (motifs) studied in the course: 1. Define the theme you chose and give a basic explanation of the technology presented in the case study. 2. Discuss the theme in relation to the chosen case and its technology: How does the selected case demonstrate the theme you chose? Explain and support your discussion using: At least one example from the case study (details from the video or advertisement), and At least one central idea, claim, or concept from one of the thinkers studied in the course (from the readings or lectures). 3. Summarize your discussion of the case study, while referring to the technology, the theme, and the article you discussed: What are the relationships between the technology, the theme, and the case study? What can we learn about the relationship between communication and society from the case you chose? * You may (but are not required to) refer to approaches such as instrumentalism, technological determinism, social construction, or political economy.
