Individual Analysis

Write a 3.55 page response analyzing your selected cases. Your response should include the following sections for each case:

Introduction to Theories

• Define and explain at least three theories covered in Weeks 5 and 6 (e.g., Post-Colonial, Structural, Post-Modern, Cultural Safety vs. Competency, Anti-Oppression, or Prime).
• Use course materials to support your explanation and provide at least one original example for each theory.
• Provide a brief explanation of why you chose these two scenarios and discarded the other scenarios.

Analysis

• Application of Theories
• Apply Dislocation, Anti-Oppression theory, and Biopsychosocial+ theory to the case.
• Discuss how each theory helps you understand the narrative, focusing on trauma history, structural oppressions, and identity.
• Key Information for Evaluation
• Identify the most critical information from the narrative for an accurate evaluation.
• Explain why this information is essential for understanding the individuals experiences and needs.
• Proposed Plan
• Based on your evaluation, propose a plan to support the individual.
• Integrate theoretical insights into your plan, focusing on trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and holistic approaches.

Conclusion

• Reflect on how your own social location, background, or lived experiences shaped your understanding of the scenarios and your approach to evaluation and planning.
• Discuss any insights gained from group discussions or class activities.

Organizational Options

Consider your preferred writing style and learning approach when choosing how to organize your response.

Option 1: Create subheadings for each scenario (e.g., Emani and Lena; Tariq and Emani, etc..), and answer each analysis question under that subheading. This approach works well if you prefer to focus deeply on one scenario at a time. Be mindful to avoid unnecessary repetition

Option 2: Use subheadings for each analysis question (e.g., Application of Theories, Key Information, and Proposed Plan), and address both scenarios under each heading by comparing and contrasting. This approach minimizes repetition but requires careful organization to ensure all aspects of each scenario are covered to the same level of depth.

These are the two scenarios I chose for this case study

Scenario #2: Emanis Story

Emani, a 26-year-old woman of Eritrean descent, immigrated to Canada with her family as a teenager. Growing up in a low-income neighborhood, she struggled with cultural transition and systemic racism. In high school, Emani often felt othered by peers and teachers, who made comments about her perfect immigrant family, contributing to her feelings of inadequacy.

While pursuing a medical degree, Emani began experiencing severe panic attacks and self-doubt. She was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder but discontinued therapy after feeling dismissed by her therapist, who suggested her anxiety stemmed from “trying too hard to fit in.” Emani now works long hours at a retail job to support her younger siblings and contribute to household expenses, leaving little time for herself.

To cope with stress, Emani has developed a habit of shopping impulsively, often using credit cards to purchase items she doesnt need. While this provides her with short-term relief, it has created financial strain, adding to her feelings of guilt and hopelessness. Emani describes feeling like she is drowning in expectations, and reports somatic symptoms such as headaches and insomnia, which she attributes to the constant pressure she feels.

Scenario #5: Tariqs Story

Tariq, a 33-year-old Somali man, arrived in Canada as a government-sponsored refugee at the age of 18. He had been living in a refugee camp for seven years after fleeing his village during a violent conflict. Tariqs parents were killed during the attack, leaving him responsible for his two younger siblings. While in the camp, Tariq worked tirelessly to protect his siblings but was exposed to violence and harsh conditions that left him with untreated injuries and symptoms of PTSD. Since arriving in Canada, Tariq has struggled to adjust to his new environment. He lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment and works as a taxi driver, a job he says leaves him feeling invisible. Tariq has begun spending most of his evenings gambling online, initially as a distraction but now as a way to try and change my luck. However, the financial losses have only increased his stress, leading him to skip meals and avoid social interactions.

Tariq has encountered racism from customers, including being told to go back to where you came from. Although he was encouraged by a regular customer to contact a local immigrant support organization, Tariq remains unsure if seeking help would bring meaningful change.

These are the three theories I am using for my introduction

• Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP)
• Focus: Addresses power imbalances and systemic oppression.
• Application: Empowers individuals by identifying and dismantling systemic barriers, promoting social justice, and advocating for structural change (Dominelli, 2002).
• Structural Social Work
• Focus: Examines how social systems and institutions contribute to inequality.
• Application: Highlights the role of societal structures (e.g., policies, economies) in creating marginalization, advocating for systemic reform to achieve equity (Mullaly & West, 2018).
• Cultural Humility
• Focus: Emphasizes self-reflection and lifelong learning about ones biases and privileges.
• Application: Encourages practitioners to approach clients as the experts of their own experiences, fostering respectful and non-hierarchical relationships (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998).
