You are welcome to respond to other students’ posts (respectfully and thoughtfully)! What is the significance of recent laws and policies restricting the teaching of Black Studies and other curricula centering marginalized groups? Reading between the lines of the Vox article, the report on Trump’s recent executive orders, and the essays on the foundations of Black Studies, what do you think are the real catalysts behind political attempts to suppress these programs? The essays of Anderson and Stewart and Fenderson et al. give us a broad history of how the field of Black Studies evolved since its founding in the late 1960s. Part of their respective analyses include student-centered push for university administrations to expand not only academic content but access for marginalized racial groups (to resources, professional jobs, relevant curricula, etc.). Nearly 60 years later, some departments (and their students) continue to fight for these things. Do you think that it is important to draw connections between past and present struggles, namely in defense of Black Studies?
