Topic: Crime Defenses

Assignment: After reading Chapter 4, write a 300-500 word essay that examines criminal defenses.

Substantive criminal law primarily defines crimes, and the law of criminal procedure consists of the rules and procedures that govern the processing of criminal suspects and the conduct of criminal trials. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Generally, the burden of proof is on the state to prove upon a reasonable doubt that the accused committed the act and had the intent to commit such an act.

Review the Chapter 4 power point presentation.

Search the FAU library and Internet for the following: (1) actus reus, (2) mens rea, and (3) criminal trial defenses.

In the essay, you need to discuss the following:

1. What are the two elements oa fa crime?
2. Discuss excuse defenses that might be used in a criminal trial.
3. Discuss justification defenses that might be used in a criminal trial.
