ESC 100 Article Summary #2 Directions and Grading Rubric
You will need to write a summary and analysis on a NEWS article. This article can come from the newspaper or you can get it online from a reputable news source. The news article needs to be recent (no more than 2 years old) and needs to show an aspect of environmental science in the report. This means it could address such things as: climate change, pollution, energy initiatives, oil use, renewable energy sources, population issues for various animals/insects/plants due to environmental or habitat changes… There are many things that would qualify. Ask if you have a question!
- Choose a news article pertaining to any area of environmental science
- Introduce the article and the topic it pertains to in our class (paragraph 1)
- Summarize the article (Paragraph 2)
- Provide an analysis (your thoughts on the matter) (Paragraph 3)
- Conclusion (Paragraph 4)
- Include the web address of where you found the article
- Works Cited (Website of the article)
- Type and save as a Word document
Grading is based on: (Please see the attached rubric below for detailed grading breakdown)
- the presence of all 4 elements (introduction, summary, analysis, conclusion)
- following directions
- grammar
- Formatting (APA Formatting – title page, headers, references, in-text citations) Please see the APA formatting section on the main page of the course in Moodle for help
- proper detail – assignment should be at least a page long – a minimum of 4 well developed paragraphs
- Works Cited (Website of the article)
