When I compared the Wandjina paintings with Edvard Munch’s The Scream, I saw that both have some similarities like the human-like figures that express emotions or meanings. Both figures in the paintings have exaggerated facial features and in the painting the use of yellow is used quite a bit in both. The paintings both feel intense and symbolistic. Despite these similarities theyre still both very different from each other, it seems to me that the meanings behind these paintings are different in context the Wandjina paintings are much older than Edvard Munchs The scream so their meanings could represent ancestor’s, spiritual beliefs, nature, or cultural beliefs, while the scream seems to represent strong emotions and feelings of fear, anxiety, and distress. The painting is also more vibrant with flowing patterns, colors, and brushstrokes. So overall the similarities in both paintings are messages, expressions, use of color and shapes, but the differences are the Wandjina painting message represent ancestral past and spirituality while Edvard Munchs The Scream, represents negative emotions while also being more colorful and vibrant.
