For the first time, some artists began to explore art as an expression of individual will and vision (Romanticism), while others continued to uphold tradition (Neoclassical and Academic art)

It is important to remember that some paintings from this time period exhibit characteristics of both Romanticism and Neoclassicism or are difficult to classify. Use your powers of observation!
