For your replies, make at least three replies to your classmates. You need to focus on the logic of the arguments and not on your personal opinion. Your responses can take any of the following forms (Please label your replies, “Option [A-E]” to tell me which of the following you are doing. ):
- Option A – Correct an invalid argument. If another student has made an invalid argument, provide your own argument, a set of premises and a conclusion, that you think is valid.
- Option B – Make a descriptive moral position statement or argument prescriptive. If someone has made a descriptive moral position statement or argument, provide an alternative that is prescriptive.
- Option C – Refute a premise using an argument by analogy (tell us which premise, exactly, you are refuting). If the argument is validly constructed, offer an argument by analogy that would refute one of the premises of the argument.
- Option D – Critique someone else’s argument by analogy. Identify relevant differences between the original situation and the analogous situation that would render the argument by analogy inapplicable.
- Option E – Suggest a different argument for a topic. If you think other arguments might also suit the chosen topic, you could offer your own argument (a set of premises and a conclusion) on that topic.
Don’t just critique someone else’s argument in your reply. Attempt to correct the argument by providing a revised argument (a set of premises that lead to a conclusion) that you think is better.
Your replies do not necessarily have to respond to an initial discussion post. You may reply to someone else’s reply. I am trying to create some back-and-forth discussion, and the only way to do that is if we have a chance to respond to each other.
Do not use the same argument twice in your replies. For example, if two students post about the death penalty, do not make an Option E reply that is the same for both students. Your replies should be unique.
