Write a 450 word journal entry for the book Aquinas on Law?
- Use detailed description and quotes from the text to identify what you take to be the central claim(s) that the work makes upon you as a reader and the supporting evidence for the claim. For example, in a work of philosophy, the claim might be that the human soul is immortal, supported by evidence and argument. In history and literature, the claim might take the form of a narrative depiction of a particular world of meaning and value, such as Einhards account of Charlemagne as an ideal king. We might say that the claim is that which invites the reader to think, imagine, and/or feel about the world and things in the world in a new and distinctive way.
- In a second level of reflection, raise any questions you may have about interpretation of the work. Are there particular terms, sentences, or paragraphs, arguments, scenes, behaviors, or actions that you find confusing or difficult to understand? How do these questions affect the way you understand the claim being made? (For example, how is one to understand Einhards mention of Charlemagnes several concubines in connection to his esteem for the greatness of the king?)
- In a third and final level of reflection, assess the reasons for and against affirming the truth and/or goodness of the claim as you understand it. Using the examples above, are you convinced on the basis of the work that the soul is immortal? Why or why not? Are you convinced that Charlemagne merits the title Great as a Christian ruler of Europe? Why or why not? It is important to use what Fr. Brophy calls generosity to open your mind to claims that challenge your own perspectives. What are the best arguments that you can make for a position that you might ultimately reject? What aspects of the claim do you affirm? Which aspects do you reject? About which aspects are you unsure? Explain your reasoning process in each case, noting the premises involved in the various positions explored.
