Description of Assignment

Interdisciplinary Hospital Ethics Committees first emerged here in the United States, and are endorsed by both the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association. Among the responsibilities of ethics committees are guiding hospital policies and making recommendations in individual patient cases. Hospitals also have a responsibility to educate not only the members of the committee, but also patients and staff about ethical issues (Hajibabaee et al., 2016). Now that you have participated in the interdisciplinary team planning care for Shawn, imagine you are submitting an application to become a member of your hospital’s ethics committee. Consider what you have learned as you identify and articulate your qualifications for this position.

1. Why should the hospital ethics committee have a member of your profession on the committee?
2. What experience do you have that qualifies you for a position on the committee?
3. What education would you need to be an effective member of this committee?
4. What education would you recommend to patients and hospital staff about an ethics committee?

Directions

Compose a paper addressing the four components listed above. Use APA format for an academic paper, and support your perspective with at least two recent journal articles from professional or scholarly literature. Assignment should be 3 to 5 pages in length not including the reference page. This assignment will be graded using the written assignment rubric.
