This assignment has four main goals:
- Increase your familiarity with Tulane Libraries and Resources
- Increase your understanding of how to compile sources into a literature review
- Increase your ability to perform research independently
- Increase your confidence and comfort with discussing your writing and research in public settings
To achieve these goals, you will complete an annotated bibliography and give a TL;DR presentation.
PLEASE NOTE…the goal of this assignment is to engage in the research process … YOU ARE NOT AND WILL NOT WRITE A “RESEARCH PAPER” THIS IS THE ASSIGNMENT!!!!!!!
An Annotated Bibliography aids in the research process by providing a deeper understanding of how and
why sources can or cannot contribute to research projects.
Your annotated bibliography must include:
10 properly cited sources in MLA INCLUDING
A MINIMUM OF 5 BOOKS
and AT LEAST 3 SCHOLARLY ARTICLES
You will write a brief (1-2 paragraph) summary EACH source and why it is useful (or not) to your research.
Please note: I will check the validity of each source to ensure it is not AI generated.
Because this assignment focuses on the independent nature of the research process, your in-class time will be devoted to time in the library and reading your sources. This means that instead of having traditional class, you will be conducting research on your own.
As such the weeks of February 16 and Feb 23 have been dedicated solely for you to fullty engage in your research.
To receive full credit for this assignment, you must attend an individual conference with me. This individual conference will be via ZOOM, and will serve as a check-in to answer any questions you have about your research. The individual conference will take place during the week of March 2,
By the time of your conference, you must have completed 5 of the 10 sources (a rough draft). As I will be meeting with all of my students across all three class, we will not meet formally as a class during this week. When you are not meeting with me, please use this time complete any reserach and poilish your bib.
Also note — Midterm grades are due March 6–your grade will be derived from the completion and depth of your 2 writing assignments, the strength of your individual conference, and the strength of your rough draft. IF YOU MISS YOUR INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE — YOUR MIDTERM GRADE WILL BE GREATLY IMPACTED.
The final draft (all 10 sources) will be due IN CLASS on MONDAY MARCH 9. On this class day, you will present your TL;DR which will be about your annotated bib and research activities over the past few weeks.
Here is a sample annotated bibliography (from a summer school student who is no longer a Tulane student) to give you an idea of what a good annotated bibliography looks like —
