ACADEMIC/MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS

DO NOT USE AI OR PLAGIARISM. THIS IS WORTH A LOT OF POINTS. I WILL RUN IT THROUGH MULTIPLE AI AND PLAGIARISM CHECKERS!

Write about a website/app of your choice. Consider your audience in choosing. In this paper, you will want to address the visual/multimodal culture of the website/app, the needs of the website/app visitors, and the frequency with which you view it. Take into account the website/app popularity and the message the site/app wishes to communicate.

Some apps to use maybe: Facebook and talk about how it started, or youtube, I use instagram and tik tok alot too

Please note: There is no page minimum or limit.

A works cited page is ONLY required if you used images or gathered information from outside sources.

You must incorporate the following:

1. A meaningful title that ties in your overarching themes.
2. An introduction, explaining your personal purpose for choosing this website/app and how it relates to your audience. In the introduction, you may include any background on the website/app, which is relevant, such as when it was started, by whom, for which purpose, interesting facts, etc.
3. Your main points, including:
a. Purpose: to provide information (PSA, for example), promote and market products or services (intended for revenue), buy into the culture of the product or service, invite customers to interact (submit requests, communicate with customer service, view or enter reviews, track orders), social media as a channel of communication, etc.
b. Audience: To whom is the website/app directed specifically in terms of demographics? Indicate target audience(s): for example, college students, ages 18-21, parents of toddlers, property owners, avid travelers, ages 28-35, retirees, single men or women in 20s, working mothers, dog/cat/pet owners, tweens, corporate business types with disposable income, ages 35-45, small business owners, artists/musicians, etc.
c. Context: Consider the competition in relation to other websites, products, organizations, groups, services, etc. What is the appeal to visit this site over others similar in scope? For example, Facebook or Instagram to Snapchat, Amazon to eBay, American Eagle to Hollister, YouTube to TikTok/Hulu, etc.
d. Composition: Address the layout, including color, font, videos, pictures, sound, other graphics, etc. Consider what/who is included, and, as importantly, what is excluded, from the space of the site/app pages.
4. Transitions from point to point
5. A conclusion recapping personal purpose and creating an assertion for the future of this website/app.
6. Simple language and definitions as needed.
7. Captions for any and all photos.

WHY we do this:

This multimodal analysis is designed to give us an opportunity to question why we use a website or app, specifically. Ideally, rather than just using something routinely without asking questions, this assignment helps us to recognize our “why.” Why is that important? For SO many reasons! Ask yourselves the rhetorical questions (as outlined below) of the overarching purpose, the targeted audience and how the creators of the website/app speak to that audience through intentionality in visual and verbal cues, your reason for using it over other similar websites or apps (the context), and how you put it to use in your lives (the composition).

HOW we do this:

Looking through the lens of those 4 concepts through a series of media, we analyze (print/digital) advertisements, commercials, social media, and then websites or apps. The build of this exercise not only helps us with Assignment 1, but we can also apply those concepts to any communication or project we have in this and other classes, as well as in our personal lives. For example, when composing any communication (text, social media post, email, etc.), ask yourselves what the purpose is, who your audience is and the most effective way to address them specifically, the context, or the “why now,” and how you will compose this communication, in particular, the verbals and visuals you will employ to create your message to ultimately create meaning.
