1. One of the problems Americans encountered when looking to distinguish their own national identity and culture in the nineteenth century was the fact that many of these cultural practices were already in existence and were therefore being borrowed and adapted. This was a problem we addressed when looking at early American painting and literature. Using these the fields of painting and literature, were Americans able to create their own cultural versions/forms? Why or why not?

Early American fashion and paintings were subjected to value judgements based upon how the public viewed them and whether or not the public approved of them. What were the two most important qualities or characteristics (in your opinion) that impacted the emergence of distinct American styles of fashion and painting? Explain your reasoning.
3. Within each of our weekly topics we have seen criticisms of Americas cultural developments or the attempts to initiate cultural change in the nineteenth century. Using two examples (each from a different lecture), how would you describe the individuals and groups who often opposed changes to American culture as the nineteenth century progressed, and what was their reasoning for this opposition?
