Scholarship Essay Questions

You should answer each of the following four (4) questions as accurately and completely as possible. We recommend you type them out in another application (Word or Google Doc), spell check and proofread before copying them into this application. Please make sure you address all parts of each question.

We are looking at short, concise but complete answers demonstrating the best technical writing skills you have appropriate for someone entering a college or professional career.

Question 1: What are your career goals? How has your career program prepared you for success in this field? Have you received any certifications, licenses or other credentials? How have you demonstrated the potential for success in this field? What is something that makes you uniquely qualified for this scholarship?

Please give examples where possible. Limit your response to 500 words or less.

Question 2: What are your plans after graduation? Have you applied and/or been accepted into a college (community college, university, trade school, private training center) or other post-secondary career training program (internship, apprenticeship, on-the-job training)? Are you currently working in your career field? So you plan to continue working after graduation? What career do you see yourself doing in the future?

Question 3: What experiences, outside of the classroom, have you participated in that are related to your career plans? You might include clubs, activities, volunteering, internships, honors, awards or other extra-curricular activities. This might include employment in your career field as well. Question 4: We’re eager to know why you’re passionate about receiving the Otto Rowen Career and Technical Education Scholarship. Tell us what sets you apart from other students. Can you give us an example of a time when you have applied the Rotary Four-Way Test (truth, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to others) to a specific event in your life? Wrap up with something personal about why this scholarship matters to youin 500 words or less.

Question 1

My career goal is to become a registered nurse and eventually specialize in womens health or critical care. I am passionate about providing compassionate, patient-centered care and advocating for individuals during vulnerable moments in their lives. Nursing allows me to combine my interest in science with my desire to make a meaningful difference in my community.

As a student in the Henry Ford Early College program, I have had the unique opportunity to begin my college education while still in high school. I am graduating from Henry Ford Early College this May, and I will complete my nursing program in December. This experience has accelerated my academic and professional growth, allowing me to build a strong foundation in healthcare at an early stage.

My nursing program has prepared me for success by developing my clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and ability to work in high-pressure environments. Through coursework and hands-on training, I have learned essential nursing skills such as patient assessment, infection control, and safe medication practices. I have also worked to strengthen my communication skills, which are essential for providing effective and compassionate care.

I have demonstrated my potential for success through my dedication, discipline, and strong work ethic. Balancing an early college program with a rigorous nursing curriculum has required time management, perseverance, and commitment. I have consistently pushed myself to succeed academically while preparing for a career in healthcare.

What makes me uniquely qualified for this scholarship is my determination and my early start in the nursing field. By pursuing both high school and college-level education simultaneously, I have shown initiative and a strong commitment to my future. I am not only working toward a career but also a lifelong goal of helping others and making a positive impact in healthcare.

Question 2

After graduating from Henry Ford Early College in May, I plan to continue my nursing education and complete my program in December. I am already enrolled in a nursing program, which allows me to gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience.

I plan to continue working in the healthcare field while completing my education and after graduation. Gaining real-world experience is extremely important to me because it helps me apply what I learn in the classroom to patient care. I am also involved in opportunities such as the Nurse Extern Program, which allows me to work alongside healthcare professionals and further develop my clinical skills.

In the future, I see myself working as a registered nurse in a hospital setting, where I can provide direct patient care and support individuals during critical moments. I am especially interested in womens health or critical care because these areas require strong clinical skills, quick decision-making, and compassionate care.

My long-term goal is to continue advancing my education, including earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and potentially pursuing advanced practice roles. I am committed to lifelong learning so I can provide the highest level of care to my patients and continue growing in my career.

Question 3

Outside of the classroom, I have actively participated in experiences that have prepared me for a career in nursing, especially through hands-on clinical exposure. One of my most valuable experiences has been completing a 10-week Nurse Extern Program, where I gained direct insight into patient care and the responsibilities of healthcare professionals.

After completing the program, I was offered a permanent position as a Nurse Extern in the Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In this role, I work alongside nurses and healthcare teams to provide care for critically ill patients. This experience has allowed me to develop important clinical skills, improve my ability to work in high-pressure environments, and strengthen my communication with both patients and healthcare staff.

Working in the ICU has taught me the importance of attention to detail, quick decision-making, and teamwork. I have observed complex procedures, assisted with patient care, and learned how nurses respond to critical situations. These experiences have reinforced my passion for nursing and have helped me better understand the level of responsibility and dedication required in this field.

In addition to my clinical experience, I have also focused on strengthening my academic skills by studying consistently and practicing nursing concepts outside of class. Nursing school requires discipline and time management, and I have worked hard to balance my responsibilities while maintaining strong performance.

Through these experiences, I have developed both the technical skills and the personal qualities needed to succeed in nursing, including compassion, resilience, and professionalism. My involvement in the Nurse Extern Program and my current role in the ICU have given me a strong foundation and have prepared me to continue growing in my future nursing career.

Question 4

I am passionate about receiving the Otto Rowen Career and Technical Education Scholarship because it would support my educational journey during a critical time in my career. As a Henry Ford Early College student graduating in May and continuing my nursing program through December, I am working toward completing my education on an accelerated path. This scholarship would help reduce financial stress and allow me to focus on my training and clinical experiences.

What sets me apart from other students is my determination and my willingness to take on challenges in order to achieve my goals. Completing both high school and college-level coursework while pursuing a nursing career has required discipline, time management, and perseverance. I have remained committed to my goal of becoming a nurse and making a difference in the lives of others.

An example of applying the Rotary Four-Way Test in my life involves helping a classmate who was struggling with course material. I made sure the information I shared was accurate and honest (truth), treated them with patience and respect (fairness), encouraged a positive and supportive environment (goodwill), and helped both of us succeed academically (benefit to all). This experience showed me the importance of integrity and collaboration, which are also essential in healthcare.

This scholarship is important to me because it supports my goal of becoming a nurse and giving back to my community. Nursing is not just a career for meit is a way to serve others with compassion, respect, and professionalism. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue my education and move closer to making a meaningful impact in healthcare.
