For Discussion 2, let’s look at the topic of antibiotic use in livestock. Currently, the FDA approves the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals (NOTE: this is now moving to more veterinary oversight vs being over-the-counter). There are two reasons for antibiotics to be used in livestock: 1. To treat disease in livestock and 2. To promote growth in livestock. NOTE: The dosage of antibiotics given to promote growth in animals is too low to treat disease. In this discussion, you will be assigned to support or refute the use of antibiotics for the purpose of livestock growth (check your iCollege email for your side of the debate by 2/9 at the latest). While your personal opinions may not align with the side of the debate that you are placed on, please take this as an opportunity to expand your knowledge on this topic.
A detailed description of what is required for your post is available in this section of the , but here is the general breakdown of what you need to do:
- One to two page post based upon your assigned side of this issue
- Paraphrase information that you present….keep quotes to a minimum
- Must include minimum of 2 reference
Discussion Topics: Three times this semester, a discussion topic will be posted that relates to the material that we are covering. This may be research related to one of the chapters we are covering, or you may be asked to read and respond to a news article that I post. You will be placed into a small group within the class to maximize meaningful interactions regarding the material. Each person will have to relate their own thoughts in an original post, as well as post at least three responses to other posts. Your responses must have substancestatements like I agree! and Im not sure I understand will not count as responses for grading purposes, but are certainly welcome in the proper context within a conversation.
Your original post to each topic is expected to be the length of one to two double-spaced pages (not including references) in a word-processing program, though it does not have to be double-spaced on the message board. I strongly recommend that you write and edit your answer in a word-processing program, then copy and paste it into the discussion board window once it is complete. iCollege has the unfortunate tendency to kick you out just when you go to post something and Im sure you would rather not lose all your work if it does that. Do not post answers as attachments.
You must use at least two references in each of your main discussion board posts. Answers MAY NOT be cut- and-pasted from other sources; you must write the answers in your own words and cite the sources that you used at the end of each portion (not simply at the end of the post). You may use quotes but they must be a minor (less than 15% total) part of your answer. Be sure that quotes are in quotation marks, but even paraphrased information must be cited in APA or MLA format. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism and will be dealt with according to those policies. NOTE: I will be screening your posts through Turn-it-in, which contains AI-detecting software. AI-generated discussions are considered plagiarism and will be reported.
You are required to respond to other peoples posts in addition to submitting your own. Each one that you read will increase your understanding of the topic; posting thoughtful responses will build your comprehension of the topic, as well as building our classs community. I encourage you to add your views to theirs. If you have questions about what theyve written, please ask them on the board! You must respond to a minimum of three other peoples posts for every discussion. You are also expected to respond to questions that other people ask about your post.
The first week, you will post your initial response to the topic. The second week, you will write your responses to other peoples posts. The board will close at the end of that week so that I can grade the contributions.
Posts will be graded on both content and grammar. Posting in all lowercase or capital letters, misspellings, improper grammar, etc. will cost you points regardless of the merit of your response. Double-check your messages before posting them!
Each discussion will be graded out of 100 points:
- (50 points) Quality of your original post: factually correct, on topic, shows insight, etc.
- (25 points) Formatting and references: grammar, spelling, punctuation, citations, etc.
- (25 points) Responses to other people: number, substance, understanding, etc.
**Failing to quote and/or cite your sources properly will cost you 25 points off your grade and may lead to a formal charge of plagiarism. **
