Essay Instructions:
Write a reflective short essay responding to the following 4 prompts, drawing on both your map notes, the reading, and our class discussion. Please compose an essay, and not a list of answers.
- Your Census Tract
- What neighborhood did you focus on?
- What were the data points for your tract from Slides 1 & 2 (e.g., population density and racial/ethnic demographics)?
- How do those numbers compare to other parts of the city?
- Give one example from another tract you viewed.
- Patterns of Segregation
- What patterns did you notice about the geographic distribution of racial and ethnic groups across Philadelphia? (Slides 3 & 4)
- Were there areas with especially high concentrations of one group? Any surprising or familiar patterns?
- Connecting to History
- Refer to Zoe Greenbergs article:
- What happened to the Jones family?
- How does the historical story from the article help explain the patterns you saw in todays map data?
- Include at least one quote from the article that helps connect past and present.
- Personal or Classroom Connection
- Choose one of the following:
- How did our classroom conversation shape how you interpreted one of the maps?
- How do the patterns you saw on the maps relate to your own neighborhood, past or present?
- Was there a detail in the map or article that made you rethink something you thought you understood about housing or race?
Essay Format and Requirements: You are welcome to approach the essay in whatever way you want, as long as your reflection and thoughts are written out in full sentences, and your essay includes and introduction and a conclusion. Feel free to include images, and I encourage you to use quotes from the readings to help you present your argument. Your essay should be should be at least 200 words long, but please feel free to write more than that.
