Task 1: Critical review (1400 words) – due March 8
Instructions
This is a written assignment requiring you to read scholarly articles and/or book chapters and to write a 1400-word paper responding to three questions about them. The purpose of the assignment is to help you develop foundational skills in scholarly reading, writing, analysis, citing and referencing.
- Step 1: Choose a focus article
Choose ONE focus article from the official required reading list for this unit from Week 1Connections or Week 2Disruption.
- Step 2: Find and read two or three further recent scholarly sources
Using the Monash Library search function, find TWO or THREE further scholarly articles or book chapters from 2024, 2025 or 2026 that you can connect to your focus article. The articles/chapters must be from publications within the media or communications discipline, or a closely associated discipline (e.g. NOT psychology, medicine, or engineering).
- Step 3: Write a 1400-word paper responding to the following questions
Write a discussion incorporating answers to the questions below. You should also write an introduction and conclusion to your paper, each about 10% of the word limit (i.e. 140 words each).
Questions:
- What is the purpose and main argument of the focus reading and how does it relate to principles of global media and communications that we have looked at in Weeks 1 and/or 2 of this unit?
- Compare and contrast your focus reading with the two or three further scholarly articles/chapters you have found and read. What theoretical concepts or principles seem most important? How do the arguments support or refute each other?
What are some real-world examples you can think of to illuminate your discussion? These should be examples from media sources, not just repeating those in the chosen scholarly readings themselves. Incorporate your examples through your discussion to illustrate your points.
Task 2: Essay (2000 words) – due April 5 (7-10 references)
Step 1: Choose ONE of the following questions.
1. How have globalisation and transnational borders affected media and/or communications practices? Focus on a major current challenge or issue.
2. Why is it important for a wide variety of voices to be included in media and/or communications spheres? What factors need to be taken into account in connection to offering alternatives to mainstream voices?
3. Discuss generative AI use in professional media and/or communications practices, and how widespread accessibility to AI might affect such practices in future.
note
