Food technology has made our food supply safer and more accessible, but foodborne illness is still a concern when food is not handled properly. As consumers, we can reduce risk by practicing everyday food safety habits such as washing hands and kitchen surfaces, preventing cross-contamination, cooking foods to safe internal temperatures, and storing food correctly. Simple steps like washing fruits and vegetables and checking expiration dates can significantly lower risk (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023).
Health professionals play an important role through education and prevention. Providing clear, practical guidance on safe food handling helps people make informed choices at home. Health professionals can also support public health efforts by promoting food safety standards and raising awareness about chemical contaminants and pesticide exposure in the food supply (Food and Drug Administration [FDA], 2022).
At-risk populations, including older adults, pregnant individuals, young children, and people with weakened immune systems, should take extra precautions. Avoiding high-risk foods such as unpasteurized dairy products, raw or undercooked meats and eggs, and un-reheated deli meats can help reduce illness risk. Careful food storage and consistent hand hygiene are especially important for these groups, as food-borne illnesses can lead to more serious health outcomes (CDC, 2023).

We can reduce our risk of foodborne illness by practicing basic food safety habits at home. Those include washing our hands before and after food preparation, separating raw meats from ready-to-cook foods, using a food thermometer to check the temps especially on chicken or pork, and refrigerating our meals immediately after we eat so nothing spoils. Health professionals can reinforce these same principles through education and promoting awareness. The at-risk population must take extra precautions by avoiding raw or undercooked meat, eggs, and seafood. They need to choose pasteurized dairy products and remember to wash all produce thoroughly. Being mindful of cross-contamination is also key to preventing foodborne illness. These preventive measures align with national food safety recommendations and are proven to reduce the risk of foodborne illness (U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA], 2023).
