3.6 Assignment: Celebrity baby
Students have been introduced to heredity to Punnett Squares, and also various technologies in genetics to select various traits. This unconventional assignment will require students to pick two celebrities to mix the traits of. They can be of any gender. The goal is to identify which visible traits in those celebrities are dominant and recessive, and how they can actually be mixed using technology, regardless of gender. This assignment can potentially lead into technologies that can assist people of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations in having children, should students choose two celebrities that are not biologically male and female.
This assignment is worth 15% of your course grade.
Instructions
1. Research what facial features in humans would fit in the binary: dominant and recessive.
2. Identify 2 celebrities with biological facial features (not as a result of plastic surgery) that are quite different from each other. Identify two binary facial features (see above) to focus on. For example, this can be detached earlobes (dominant) versus attached earlobes (recessive), and a widows peak (dominant) versus no widows peak (recessive).
3. Predict all possible genotypes of both celebrities for the two selected features. Explain how it is possible for them to have these genotypes, and what their parents genotypes may have been due to meiosis.
4. Complete two Punnett squares, one for each selected facial trait, using one of the genotypes predicted in step 3 for each celebrity, to display the genotype and phenotype ratios of the offspring between both celebrities. Report on which phenotype will most likely result.
5. Assuming the celebrities want to have children and they are of the same biological sex, and/or the celebrities only wanted their child to have one of the partners recessive facial traits, what current technologies can help these celebrities? Present these findings in a paragraph format.
6. The final submission will be one document featuring the following subtitles and their respective descriptions in brackets:
a) Celebrity names (both celebrities real names);
b) Two facial traits (the two facial traits that are dominant and recessive only that you wish to select). You may wish to include pictures from the internet of their selected facial features.
c) Genotypes (the celebrities possible phenotypes for the two traits that you selected, with a paragraph to explain the meiosis mechanisms that enabled them to have these traits passed down from their parents).
d) Punnett Squares (2 Punnett squares, with each one showing one of the two facial traits you selected with both celebrities as parents. The most likely phenotype in both cases must be reported.)
e) Current technologies (that can assist the celebrities in having a child if they cannot biologically conceive, or if they only wish their child to have one of the partners recessive traits).
f) APA-formatted reference list (with list of sources used for research).

Success criteria and rubric
The two facial traits selected must be dominant or recessive.
The genotypes for both celebrities must be genetically sound (consider homozygous dominant and heterozygous where dominant traits are the phenotype).
The explanation of the familial origins of the genotypes must be 200-250 words in length and include the meiosis mechanisms that can explain their origin.
The Punnett squares must be properly labelled and complete for both chosen facial features.
The current technologies, based on research, must help those celebrities produce the offspring that they want.
The current technologies paragraph must be 200-250 words in length.
APA-formatted in-text citations, and an accompanying reference list, are present.
