1943 Los Angeles Smog

students are required to research, write and orally present original submittals during the course. These

will be of three types: a description of a famous air pollution episode; a debate position and a permit

application.

The first set of student presentations will be short (less than 7 minute) summaries of noteworthy air

pollution episodes from the past 150 years. From the list of these episodes, each student will pick one

and will research its key features. Episode presentations will be scheduled in chronological order; one

or two per class, usually at the start of class. Selection and signup will be on a first come basis. The

standard outline for topics to be covered for each episode will be as follows:

A. Episode name, location, date(s)

B. What happened? pollutants, concentrations (if known), atmospheric conditions

C. Health effects: deaths, hospitalizations, complaints

D. Corrective actions taken ;curtailments; evacuations; testing; etc.

E. Any other interesting facts/oddities/conclusions

As you research information about each episode, ask yourself which facts you think will be most

interesting to your classmates! In conjunction with each presentation, you are to submit a deliverable

writeup of your episode, following the same format as your presentation.
