Due: Thu, Feb 19 |

Description

Primary Response is due by Thursday (11:59:59pm Central), Peer Responses are due by Saturday (11:59:59pm Central).

Primary Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 500700 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

For this Discussion Board, please complete the following:

Library Research Assignment

Two-phase commit (2PC) protocol and three-phase commit (3PC) protocol are two most popular algorithms for managing how to commit or abort distributed transactions in a distributed database management system (DDBMS).

Study the relevant content in the course materials and investigate the Library and Internet for information about 2PC and 3PC. Then, based on the results of your research, discuss the main difference between the two in the following aspects:

  • Terminate a distributed transaction
  • Recover from a system wide power off failure

List the main steps that each type of the site involved in the transaction will take when 2PC or 3PC is applied during the terminating process or recovery process.

Responses to Other Students:

Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 200-word reply about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening. To help you with your discussion, please consider the following questions:

  • How would you justify a different perspective from your classmates on the topic?
  • How, additionally, would you defend your classmates position?
  • What critique do you offer your classmate in regard to clarity and thoroughness of their post?
  • Please address all prompts. When offering counterargument or justification, consider practice, theory, and examples from your own experience, reading, or current events in presenting your position.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your textbook, all course resources, and any external research and resources you have gathered.

Unit 2 – Individual Project (125 points)

Due: Sun, Feb 22 |

Description

Assignment Details:

Study the relevant content in the course materials and investigate the Library and Internet for the definitions of ACID properties, the CAP theorem, and mobile database, as well as the problems of a mobile database. Then, based on the results of your research, present a high-level design of a transaction processing model for the mobile database by applying the CAP theorem. You can make any specific assumption on the characteristics of the application that the mobile database needs to support to narrow the scope of the design. You need to include the following in the design:

  • Use one example to examine at least one problem with any one of the ACID properties that cannot be ensured for your transaction.
  • Use one example to evaluate the specific trade-off among CAP properties in your proposed transaction processing model
  • Examine the rationale behind the trade-off and the pros and cons of your proposed transaction processing model.

List at least 5 references (textbooks can be used as references, too).

Individual Project Rubric

The Individual Project (IP) Grading Rubric is a scoring tool that represents the performance expectations for the IP. This Individual Project Grading Rubric is divided into components that provide a clear description of what should be included within each component of the IP. Its the roadmap that can help you in the development of your IP.
